10 Steps to Travel Green

What does it mean to travel green? What can you do during your stay that could minimize the environmental impact of your adventure? Those are just some of the questions we often ask ourselves when we are traveling. We all know traveling takes a lot of resources and has a significant impact on local communities and natural habitats. Traveling green is all about being conscious of the environment.  Here are ten tips to keep in mind when it comes to traveling green.

1. Book with Environmentally Friendly Airlines

Even though air travel is the least eco-friendly way of transportation, there are airlines that are working towards reducing their carbon impact. Fly with airlines that are part of the IATA carbon offset programs. Book non-stop flights as often as possible to reduce the amount of fuel needed.

2. Do Local, Buy Local

Doing local activities limits the need for transportation.  Staying local and buying local products such as art, souvenirs, food, and clothing promotes the local economy.  The locals can use this money to make their community an even better and greener travel destination.  Local products are also more likely to be made from green products and process. Also, avoid purchasing products from companies that exploit locals.

3. Use Local Transportation

The “greenest” form of transportation is human power (i.e. walking or biking).  It’s also a great way to get some exercise while traveling.  When staying local, try to walk or bike as often as possible to help keep cars off the road.  If transportation is needed while you are traveling, use low emission, low polluting methods, such as public transportation, hybrid, or electric vehicles.

4. Reduce Water Consumption

An indispensable item to bring while traveling is your personal BPA-free water bottle. There is no need to buy water bottles when you can refill your own.  Also, be sure to shut off the tap when you are done using it to avoid wasting water.  Many hotels use toilets, sinks, and showers that use much less water than the ones we use at home.

5. Reduce Energy Consumption

When not in the room, it is always good practice to turn off any lights and the air conditioning, some hotels have special room keys that will do this for you as you exit the room.  Reusing towels and linens is not only a way to save water, but it saves energy as well since less washing and drying is needed.

6. Do Low Carbon Activities

Activities such as horseback riding, mountain climbing, swimming, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and trekking are just some of the activities that help travelers to embrace and discover the local natural wonders while keeping the air free from emissions and pollutants.

7. Respect Local Habitats and Species

When traveling to new locations you will see all kinds of new animals, plants, landscapes, and habitats.  Avoid disturbing these areas as much as possible.  This will allow future travels to appreciate them as well.  Also, don’t purchase products made from endangered plants and animals. Remember the saying, “Take nothing but pictures, leave only footprints”.

8. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Many popular travel destinations around the world are littered with trash.  The best way to keep our favorite destinations clean is to limit the amount of products you use. Of course, we all use products when we travel, so be sure to reuse and recycle them after use.  The best example is a reusable water bottle.  It limits the need for non-reusable bottles, can be used again and again, and can be recycled.

9. Share Your Experience

After experiencing the beauty of the chosen destination, there is no better way to show gratitude than to spread the word. Writing a review is a great way to start. Not only does it let the host know how much you enjoy your time there, it’s also an inspiring testimony for travelers that are thinking of going there. For some of us, we feel empowered after such amazing journey and we don’t want to stop there.

10. Choose a Green Hotel for Your Stay!

Carefully choose the place that you decide to stay. Look for places that implement green practices like recycling, composting, environmentally friendly products, local products, clean energy, and promote the local community. Many hotels are gradually switching to green practices.
